Here, the Pikmin allow other players to rent or buy books with the knowledge and research they have. Renting a book gives you only half of the benefit of the research. Such as if you rented a book on Power Bracelets, you would have it increase the strength of Power Bracelets only half as much as if you bought it.

Rent: 20 Petals
Buy: 40 Petals

Flying Skills and Techniques - Aerial Combat Research: Increases strength of air units.
Rent: 40 Petals
But: 80 Petals

Guns and Their Many Uses/Functions - Gun Research: Increases strength of guns and allows all units to use them.
Rent: 30 Petals (does not increase, but allows use.)
Buy: 60 Petals
