I'm sure many of you are wondering what exactly a text based RTS is. It can seem pretty complicated at first, but don't fear! I can help you get into this unique genre of roleplaying.
First, let's cover the different established styles of text based RTS games and RPs
Wargames: War games is a lesser known style in which you build a military force in real time. They usually involve diplomacy options, and small resource system. They are usually focused a lot like you'd see in a normal real time strategy game. You try to make some enemies friends and crush the others without getting crushed yourself. You'll need to manage/recruit units and make plans to attack an enemies and create diplomatic routes with possible allies, etc.
Nation RPs: This form is a lot more common. Most of these focus more on roleplaying as a leader of a faction or group vying for dominance. While they still focus heavily on diplomacy, war, trade etc. They are often somewhat more story oriented and aren't as directly involved in controlling troops and managing resources. These are almost a lot more detailed in areas of diplomacy and character actions, and don't involve micromanaging.
Arena: this variant is very rare and I've only seen it once or twice. Usually involves a group of military factions fighting to the death. Has no micromanagement and no story. Just brutal destruction.
Next you might be wondering what these games look like. If you want a good example of a WARGAME, look into the archives! Once upon a time this forum was built around a single wargame. There are lots of nation RPs around the internet, and it's not hard to find one just by googling the term... As for arena RPs, I doubt you'll find one easily. But if you need help planning one out, I'm sure I can help you with some of the basics.
There's also nothing saying you can't make your own unique style or ideas. I've seen people do many different ideas and things for creating text based RTS games.
Many text based RTS require time and patience as well as planning. Be steady my friends, and the fruits of war shall be yours...
